Practical information

As previously mentioned, taking part in a university exchange is a unique and very enriching experience, provided that you prepare it well. Indeed, preparing your exchange requires a lot of time and determination. In addition to the university agreements and the search for the destination and university of your dreams, you will also have to think about the extra-academic aspects.

In this section, you will find the information you need to prepare for your exchange from a practical and daily life point of view. Amongst other things, we provide you with details of the different ways of financing your study abroad such as mobility grants, various accommodation options, the importance of differences in academic calendars between countries, insurance requirements as well as special needs support.

We understand the many questions, doubts and uncertainties that preparing for an exchange involves. We therefore strongly recommend that you get in touch with former exchange students to find out more about the exchange experience. To this end you have different options.

  • First of all, you have the possibility to participate in the ambassadors' evening, an event organized by the UNIL every year in May, and in which former exchange students take part.
  • You can also contact the ALUMNIL network, which can put you directly in contact with one of their "contact persons" currently living in your destination country, and thus can give you practical information.
  • You can also contact us directly at studentmobility@unil.ch so that we can put you in touch with former students who have done a mobility.
